Brief Bio

Dr. Andreas Jeffrey Weiss is currently a NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP) fellow at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center under the supervision of Dr. Teresa Nieves-Chinchilla. He is originally from Vienna, Austria and attained his Bachelor and Master degrees at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH Zurich). His PhD was subsequently obtained at the University of Graz in Austria under the supervision of Dr. Rumi Nakamura. During the time of his PhD, he was working on modeling interplanetary coronal mass ejections and magnetic flux ropes at the Space Research Institute (Austrian Academy of Sciences) under the supervision of Dr. Christian Möstl.

His current research interests focus on interplanetary coronal mass ejections, their accompanying sheaths and the design of corresponding multi-spacecraft missions.

Research Interests

Magnetic Flux Ropes

Heliophysics: Theory & Modeling

Developer of the unique distorted magnetic flux rope (DMFR) model, which allows for the description of almost arbitrarily complex magnetic flux rope structures. This model is primarily used to describe interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) that are deformed due to their interaction with the solar environment. Other potential applications include solar flux ropes.

Empirical & numerical modeling

Heliophysics: Theory & Modeling

Primary developer & maintainer of the semi-empirical 3D Coronal Rope Ejection (3DCORE) model that is used to describe the magnetic field structure of ICMEs.

Optimal experimental design

Heliophysics: Technology & Missions

Currently developing techniques to optimize multi-spacecraft constellations for the purpose of reconstructing and understanding the geometry and structure of ICMEs or small-scale flux ropes using Bayesian methods.
