An All-of-Society Approach to Protecting Communities from Extreme Heat
Juli Trtanj | NOAA Climate Program Office
05.20.24 @ 1 p.m. ET
HYBRID – 33/H114 or Teams

The health and productivity of billions of people worldwide is being impacted by heat waves that are increasing in intensity, frequency, and duration in a warming climate. In the U.S. alone, extreme heat costs the economy billions of dollars anually. Juli Trtanj from the NOAA Climate Program Office leads U.S. and global efforts with other federal, state, local, and international agencies, academic and private partners to make heat health information actionable. Ms. Trtanj will present some of the ongoing activities aimed at helping communities manage and improve resilience to extreme heat, including the launch of heat.gov. She will discuss recent developments, lessons learned from practitioners in the field, and provide an outlook on where the NOAA Climate Program Office extreme heat approach is evolving.

Juli Trtanj is the NOAA Climate and Health Program Director and One Health Lead. She also serves as Executive Director of the National Integrated Heat Health Information System (NIHHIS) and Global Heat Health Information System (GHHIN), leads the White House Interagency Workgroup on Extreme Heat, and co-chairs the U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) Crosscutting Group on Climate Change & Human Health (CCHHG) and the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) Health Community of Practice. Ms. Trtanj earned her Masters in Environmental Science from Yale University.
