Brief Bio

Dr. Simon is the Senior Scientist for Planetary Atmospheres Research in the Solar System Exploration Division at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. She received her PhD in Astronomy in 1998 from the New Mexico State University. Her scientific research involves the study of the composition, dynamics, and cloud structure in jovian planet atmospheres, primarily from spacecraft observations. She is PI of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program, a productive yearly observing program. Dr. Simon is an author on more than 175 scientific publications on giant planet atmospheres, small body surface composition, instrumentation and more.

Dr. Simon is also involved in multiple robotic flight missions, as well as future mission concept development. She was a co-investigator on the Cassini Composite Infrared Spectrometer (CIRS) and the Deputy Instrument Scientist for the Landsat 9 TIRS2 instrument. She is currently the instrument scientist for the OSIRIS-REx Visible and near-IR Spectrometer (OVIRS) and Project Scientist for OSIRIS-APEX, and is the Lucy L'Ralph instrument Deputy PI. She has led myriad mission concept studies and a New Frontiers mission proposal.

Dr. Simon is active in education and outreach and gives frequent public lectures. She also serves the community and has served on various professional society committees. She was a convener of several major workshops including a 2013 AGU Chapman conference and the 2024 Uranus Flagship workshop. She served on the steering group, as the vice chair of the giant planets panel, for both the 2013-2022 Visions and Voyages and 2023-2032 Original, Worlds, and Life Planetary Science Astrobiology Decadal Surveys. Dr. Simon was the 2023 recipients of the Division for Planetary Sciences Claudia J. Alexander prize, was awarded a 2022 Presidential Rank Award for Meritorious Public Service, and has asteroid 84994 amysimon named in her honor.

Current Projects

Deputy Instrument Scientist, OSIRIS-REx Visible and Near-IR Spectrometer (OVIRS)

Asteroids

OSIRIS-REx is a New Frontiers mission that launched in September 2016 to the near-Earth asteroid 101955 Bennu.  OVIRS is a visible and near-IR point spectrometer covering wavelengths from 0.4 to 4.3 microns.  It is used to characterize the composition of Bennu's surface, looking for organic material, and to study the effects of space weathering.  The first OVIRS discovery at Bennu was the widespread presence of hydrated minerals, indicating aqueous alteration occurred on Bennu's parent body.

Deputy Instrument Scientist, Landsat 9 Thermal IR Sensor (TIRS-2)

Earth

Landsat 9 is the next mission in the very successful Landsat series.  TIRS-2 is a two band thermal infrared sensor at 10 and 12 microns, designed to study land and ocean temperatures, and the effects of plant evapotranspiration.

Deputy Instrument PI, Lucy L'Ralph

Asteroids

Lucy is a Discovery-class mission to study the Trojan asteroids.  Launching in 2021, it will visit a main belt asteroid and multiple Trojan asteroids trapped in Jupiters L4 and L5 lagrange points. L'Ralph is a visible camera and near-IR spectrometer buidling on the heritage of the New Horizons Ralph and OSIRIS-REx OVIRS instruments.

PrincipaI Investigator, "Hubble 2020: Outer Planets Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) Program"

Solar System

The OPAL program is a yearly campaign to image each of the outer planets from the Hubble Space Telescope with Wide Field Camera 3.  OPAL was designed to enable global mapping over two rotations of each planet to allow for generating complete 2-D wind fields, color and cloud mapping, and long-term trend evaluation from consistent data sets for the remainder of the Hubble mission.  Discoveries have included two new dark spots on Neptune, vertical growth balancing horizontal shrinking of Jupiter's Great Red Spot, and increased polar haze on Uranus.

Project Scientist, OSIRIS-APEX

Remote Sensing

OSIRIS APEX is an approved extended mission to send the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft on to asteroid Apophis. This mission will begin after release of the collected Bennnu sample, and arrives at Apophis just after its near-Earth encounter in 2029.

Co-Investigator, JUICE JANUS

Remote Sensing

JANUS is the visible camera aboard the ESA JUICE mission to Ganymede. JANUS is expected to make observations trhoughoutt he Jupiter system, in addition to studying the surface of Ganymede.
